Halloween Owl Cookies

These fun cookies were made with from a favorite sugar cookie recipe and Halloween shaped cookie cutters.  The dough can be made a day ahead and kept refrigerated until ready to use.

Easy To Make Sugar Cookie Recipe

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • flour mixed with powdered sugar, for rolling out dough

Sift together flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. Place butter and sugar in large bowl of electric stand mixer and beat until fluffy and light in color. Add egg, vanilla and milk and beat to combine. Gradually add flour, and beat until mixture starts to form a ball. If the mixture is too dry, add a bit of milk or if the mixture is wet add a little of flour. Divide the dough in half, wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

Sprinkle surface where you will roll out dough with flour and powdered sugar. Remove 1 wrapped pack of dough from refrigerator at a time, sprinkle rolling pin with flour and roll out dough to 1/4-inch thick.  If dough gets warm during rolling, a neat trick is to place a cold cookie sheet on top for 10 minutes to chill. Cut into desired shape, place  1-inch apart on parchment, or silicone baking mat. Bake for 7 to 9 minutes or until cookies are golden brown at edges. Rotate cookie sheet halfway through baking time. Let cookies sit on baking sheet for 2 minutes then allow the cookies to completely cool on wire rack. Decorate with icing and sprinkles. Store in airtight container for up to 1 week.
